Leave Me Alone, You Alien Bastards...

I have a fear of heights.

I have since I was a kid.

I can't stand too close to the edge of anything higher than an easy jump.

I can't even comfortably look out the window of a tall building without getting a bit unnerved.

Standing on a ladder makes me quiver.

My mother once went to a psychic and showed her a picture of me. She said that in a previous life, I was a fighter pilot, shot down in World War 2.

That makes total sense.

Cuckoo.

When people ask me what I am afraid of, heights is what I tell them.

FINAL ANSWER?

Not quite...

What I am about to divulge might destroy any shred of credibility I have built for myself over the years. It may seem far fetched and extravagant but it is simply the truth as it relates to my experiences.

I am afraid of sleep.

This may seem odd to those who know me well.

Jason you love sleep. You adore it. You embrace the opportunity to lay back, cuddle up under the warmth of a freshly washed quilt, rest your weary keppie on a cool pillow and gay shluffen.

Yes. This is true. I love sleep but I fear for the times when sleep takes me to a place that makes me feel vulnerable and unsafe. I fear the loss of control.

I fear the aliens.

*Needle of record player scratching vinyl.*

What are you, a fucking wackadoo?

No. I am no wackadoo and I know what I know.

It doesn't happen much but every few months, maybe once a year, I experience a terrifying out of body experience during sleep. I have heard the term "sleep paralysis" used to describe this but I am not sure that this is a diagnosis as much as it is a simple description of the symptoms.

This is what happens...

During the deepest part of my slumber, I become aware of my state of being. It is almost as if I am watching my self from above my bed. I can see myself. I can see my wife and through the darkness I can make out bits and pieces of my bedroom. The only thing is...

I can't move.

I can't move a muscle.

I am completely and utterly trapped inside my own dead shell.

I am dreaming but I am awake.

It is a helpless and terrifying feeling.

It is as if I were on a cold, sterile metal cart in the morgue, about to be sliced open by the mortician.

I try to scream.

I try to lift my arms.

I try with every ounce of strength to nudge my sleeping wife so she can jar me awake.

I count to three in my head and try to lunge my arm upward in a desperate but futile attempt to escape.

I hear my own cries; a flutter of crackling noise, barely audible.

Nothing.

I panic until the fear becomes unbearable. It seems hopeless, as if I will never be free from the grips of my nightmare.

Then my wife. My sweet wife rescues me. She knows I am struggling. She knows I am trapped. She's been here before with me. She knows what it takes to bring me back.

This has happened so many times during our years together that she is fully aware of my level of discomfort.

We have talked at length about the experience I have. We have even gone so far as to talk about what she needs to do if she becomes aware of this situation developing.

She knows first to firmly nudge me. She knows to then talk to me in a loud voice in order to startle me. If this doesn't work, she knows that she must forcefully slap me in the face, repeatedly if I don't respond to the previous tactics.

This must happen quickly. Every second is important.

I know this seems bizarre but it is true and it is serious to me. As serious as a heart attack.

When I finally awaken, I ask her if I was moving and she says yes.

I ask her if I was saying anything and she tells me that it was as if I was crying for help.

This is exactly what I feel. It is exactly what I see.

About 12 years ago, before my wife and I had our first child, I had experienced one of these episodes of sleep paralysis. We were living in an apartment at the time. This particular episode was different.

During my paralysis, I became aware of another presence.

I was not alone.

As I lay in bed, watching my nightmare unfold, there appeared a long, thin, deformed, black figure in the doorway to my bedroom. It slowly approached the foot of my bed. I tried furiously to shock myself awake but to no avail. Frozen in terror I felt my will turn over to the darkness.

I stared at the black figure and tried to make out the details of its face. They seemed blurry and unrecognizable.

The figure reached toward me and placed its hand on my leg. I felt the pressure of its grip. It did not hurt but it made me feel powerless.

Then without any noticeable passage of time, it was gone.

Like so many times before, my wife finally succeeded in waking me up.

I paused for a moment to gather my thoughts.

The picture of the faceless being that had just violated my home was burned into my brain. The experience left me rattled and shaken.

The next day, I approached a co-worker about the experience and told him what had happened. He told me that he had gone through a similar experience. He explained to me that he had read a book that told of numerous first hand accounts involving alien contact and even abduction. He mentioned that there was a passage in the book that explained one particular circumstance that abductees had in common. The so called, "sleep paralysis".

Instead of giving me a sense of relief that others shared in my experience, it made me even more frightened.

Why is this happening to me?

How did they find me?

What have they taken from me?

Will it happen again?

Over the years, I have had several other episodes of sleep paralysis.

I have not seen the dark, alien figure since that night.

I do not know if the two things were related or if they were even real.

But I am afraid to go to sleep.

I believe we are not alone.

I pray to God that the aliens do not read my blog...

  1. Dude, if aliens are abducting humans in their sleep for research, I'm not sure that your brain and body are the ones that would leave the best impression of the human race.

  2. Just reading that scared the shit out of me. Now I'm scared to go to sleep, too!

Seriously though, that sounds like some scary shit. Now you're out-numbered by the alien invaders.

  4. That has happened to me only once. After watching 'Batman Begins'. Weird, I know. But anyway, it was horrifying as I too was trying to scream out to my husband to help but also couldn't move or vocalize at all.

Anyone else this it's weird bloggers have this in common?

  5. You're leaving out something very important.

Your favorite movie genre is horror. Has been since you were a kid. I'm taking a big leap here but I'm kind of guessing that has something to do with it.

I used to have a reoccurring dream of being chased by a killer with the inability to move faster than a slow walk. I blamed it on all the times you made me watch Friday The 13th, Nightmare on Elm Street, Halloween, etc, etc.

Stop watching scary movies, see if the dreams stop.

I can't imagine out of the 6 billion people (and change) on this planet that aliens would pick Jason Mayo, Jew Extraordinaire from Bellmore New York to experiment on. I would think they would go for more of a premiere specimen like Michael Jordan or Bill Gates. Perhaps even Jessica Biel.

Delusions of grandeur maybe? Or, aliens have been experimenting on you at least once a year for 15 years or so. Sounds likely...

I say this all tounge in cheek of course. Cool post, fun read.

  6. My husband was having similar sleep difficulties when we first got married. We went to the doctor who explained that sleep paralysis is often a result of stress, not getting enough sleep, sleeping on your back, and a number of other factors. He was never medicated but in some instances people are depended on the severity. Once in a while if he is stressed, he has an episode or two. In the past, he was having problems every night. It is scary from both sides - you and your wife but changing some habits might help.

  7. I had a coworker many years ago who had a similar experience. He even had the little scar on his back.

I have a telephone phobia. CAN'T talk on the phone without having an anxiety attack.

  9. Interesting to read. Unfortunately, I know what you mean. For me, it all started after a strikingly spiritual dream when I was about 17. I was not raised in a religious home and had no serious theological thoughts until that first experience. Then, the dreams continued for roughly a decade. The sleep paralysis was not pleasant, but it was the least concerning aspect of those dreams. The shadowy figures were strange and usually scary. Often, I could not breathe. It got much weirder than that at times. In one, out-of-body-like experience, viewing myself from a vantage point beside the bed, I saw a flickering, demon-like figure crouched over my paralyzed body. It turned from the bodily me and looked at the me that was watching it, and I woke up. In college, I read about various explanations, dreams, the night hag, sleep paralysis and sleep apnea, hypnogogic hallucinations, aliens, you name it. Frankly, it took me a long time to decide what I thought about that stuff. But, now, I'm with Gillian: they're spirits, and, they ain't friendly ones. The interesting thing is that once I found faith, the torment stopped. True story. Peace be with you.

  10. While I've never had your experience, I agree that we're not alone. Stephen Hawking tells me so. On the skeptic side, have you tried talking to your doc or a neurologist?

  11. Turn the dream. When I was younger...oh for the days...I used to dream I heard someone come into the apartment, that's how long ago it was...and I'd force my body out of bed, even though I knew I was asleep and not getting out of bed, and walk to the door and there was the criminal...rapist...robber...fill in the blanks. One night I said enough of this horseshit and when I opened the door, I made said criminal...rapist...robber...into a clown. We rode Adam's tricycle around the living room a few times, I helped him leave through the window and that was it...no more visitations.
You are the Master of your fate, you are the Captain of your soul....unless of course, you are secretly enjoying these dreams, being a horror buff.

  12. Wow. That is interesting. I don't think we are alone either and tend to lean more toward a spirit rather than an alien.

I have seen things in my own house that have made me think that we are not alone here. Nothing scary, but still. It made me think.

  18. I've only had one out-of-body experience, looking down at myself sleeping in bed. It was weird and freaked me out. I woke up crying, so relieved. I convinced myself it was a dream. It was easier to deal with that way.

After living all these years, I don't dismiss the thought of aliens, ghost, demons, spirits, etc. There's so much out there we don't know about.

    Interesting, vivid post.

  26. I'm amazed how much I learn about you through this blog.
It can't be easy to have experienced this regardless how your sleep paralysis came about. And it's even worse that you fear falling asleep in order to get the much needed rest.
I suspect stress has a lot to do with your nightmares and your love for horror movies as Michael states.
These horror movies may have caught up with you. Yet, I understand how real your experience may have been. I, too, had the out-of-body experience once. At first I thought it was a dream, but then when I realized what was happening I panicked. I remembered how much I wanted to come back and thought I wouldn't be able to. Then I heard a' whoosh' sound and it was over. I never had that experience, again.
I've had the sleep paralysis, too. Those times were attributed to being overloaded with stress.
Once I dealt with the stress or allowed myself to ride it out, the sleep paralysis stopped.
But, I never had such an encounter like you described. And I hope I never do.
However, the book, Strangers Among Us, gives us food for thought. Who knows?
It even tells readers that support groups are available for those who feel they were victims.

By the way, FYI, I never showed the psychic any photos. A good one does not require it. At least this one didn't.

Relax, son! Life is too short.
    Love, you.

  33. Jason I had these sleep paralysis/alien dreams for many years in my teens and twenties and then they went away. I didn't see them as aliens though - I saw them as ghosts. And yes, it was always a terrifying experience when I had one. I had them about once a month. I firmly believe they are dreams and they are about being in control of your life.

    ReplyDelete
  34. First of all, I believe you. You're not a freak or weirdo. I believe that shit. My Jewish friend says she was never taught about the devil or evil spirits, so I understand where you are coming from thinking the dark figure was an alien, not a spirit. Good and Evil spirits do exist. My grandfather traveled to the Amazon jungle in the 60s and researched a local tribe there. With his stories, I'm believe in spirits. Anyway, what I wanted to comment about: How to control your dreams. I heard a speech in college from a classmate who researched it. This was about 8 years ago, so I'm sorry it's a little thin. First, you must be aware of your state of consciousness all the time. Say to yourself when you are awake: "Do I know where I am?""Do I remember waking up this morning?" and "Am I sleeping." When you are awake, start to do things you want to do in your sleep. Soon, you're brain will be used to asking those questions and start to ask those questions in your sleep. When you are asleep and find yourself asking those questions it's easier to control yourself and dreams when you are asleep. Wow, that sounded really weak, sorry man. I know there is more to it, but that is all I remember. Also, someone mentioned about about sleeping on your back. My husband snores horrible, so he puts a tennis ball in a sock, and I pin it to the back of his shirt. It sounds strange, but it works. The best of luck to you. I'm sure we all want an update in a few months.

  35. It does sound like an out of body experience (what i've read of them), but that black figure crap...Man! I am scared to close my eyes now. i have developed a fear of sleep lately because I wake up with very bad anxiety. I sit on the computer looking for reasons not to go on to bed (case in point, it is 1:00 am). But to not be able to move or to talk, that is awful. I hope you can resolve this one day and I do hope that ET is not after you in anyway. I think that they are just delivering all of your fantastic blog ideas to you via leg osmosis. (Don't be shocked but I just made that shit up.) Anyhow, I'm prayin' for ya!

In my experience, most employees what to be high performers - they want to do a great job at work. A good engagement survey allows you to understand what is standing in the way of that performance. By measuring engagement levels, identifying key drivers of engagment and acting on results to drive change, companies really do see an impact on business results.
